M$ Slammed with fine

Microsoft has been slammed by the EU with a 899 Euro fine (~1.4Billion).

The European Commission, Europe’s top competition watchdog, fined Microsoft 497 million euros in March 2004 and ordered the company to open some key software to rivals so they could make compatible products.

In July 2006, the commission fined the company a further 280 million euros after determining that it was not respecting its original ruling.

The commission hit Microsoft with the new penalty, the sum of daily fines running from June 21, 2006 to October 21, 2007, because it said Microsoft had failed to charge rivals reasonable prices for access to key information about its work-group or back-office servers in contravention of the 2004 ruling.

Netflix don’t fail me now

It’s amazing how many online companies just don’t get the hint.. Granted, the linux user base is far smaller than the Windows user base.  However; Could you imagine how many *more* users someone like Netflix would gain if they supported online viewing of movies for Linux users? that’s like a instant influx of a million or more users that would pay money to use the service.. It seems kinda asinine that they won’t do it… or anyone for that matter..  oh right… Hulu does. 😉

Of course, why not sue the not-for-profit company trying to educate the poor… *sigh*

Gotta love fuckin’ morons….

Lagos Analysis Corporation (LANCOR) is going forward with its patent infringement lawsuit against the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project. LANCOR has obtained a temporary injunction against the distribution of the OLPC XO laptop in Nigeria and is seeking a permanent injunction as well as $20 million in damages. Ars Technica

Power outages suck

Downtime on this site was related to me having to run on battery power for a while last evening and then after I migrated off of battery power (which requires me powering down the server(s)) the web server daemon didn’t come back up….

Tucson Electric Power is now nominated for worst service of a utility company ever.

Why don’t high school bands *ever* grow up?

So I’m perusing facebook today and notice that there are a bunch of high school bands who think they’re “punk” having a concert called the “Cleveland Punk Reunion Show” which makes no sense first of all since the bands playing don’t live in cleveland they live in the burbs, secondly it’s at a community center so… no beer… It’s really quite sad considering these people graduated high school 4+ years ago.  I look at the pictures of these bands websites and go “Holy crap has time stood still for them?” everyone looks the same, dresses the same, and is probably still doing nothing…. High School is over folks… time to get on with life.

Ugh why do I even care…..
